In the vibrant world of creative projects, especially in audio mixing, the connection between the artist and the engineer plays a vital role in achieving success. Over the last few months, I have completed several exciting projects that not only challenged my skills but also highlighted the importance of communication and dedication to a client's artistic vision. As I seek to expand my clientele, I want to share my experiences and insights into why I love mixing and how effective communication can elevate any project.
Recent Projects: A Journey of Collaboration
In the past few months, I have enjoyed working on diverse projects, ranging from singles to EPs. Each project brought its own challenges and creative opportunities. For example, one of my favorite projects was mixing a Pop songwriter's album that masterfully blended classic pop with modern and 80's influences. The artist - Alexi Paraschos was deeply passionate about his sound, and through open communication, we honed his vision into a polished final product.
Mixing is much more than adjusting levels and adding effects; it involves grasping the artist's intent and conveying that through sound. This collaborative spirit is what makes each project unique. I thrive on the energy that comes from discussing inspirations with artists and exploring how we can transform their ideas into reality.
To give you an idea of the impact of this collaboration, during this project, we had many calls and video mix sessions where we delved deep into the subtle elements of the songs such as guitar tone, synth volume automation to bring in the next section, or even when to take out a snare hit - bouncing different sonic and arrangement ideas back and forth, adding depth and emotional resonance in a way that both he and his fans I am sure will appreciate.
Why I Love to Mix
Mixing is a true art form that melds technical skill with a deep understanding of music. I take pride in the challenge of turning raw tracks into cohesive pieces that resonate with listeners. Think of each mix as a puzzle, where every piece must fit perfectly to create harmony.
Moreover, mixing offers me the chance to engage with various musical styles. From indie rock to metal to rap, each genre has its distinct characteristics, and I relish adapting my techniques accordingly.
For instance, I recently mixed a single for Philly rapper Quan18st where I used specific techniques that added width and clarity to a standard 2-track instrumental. When working with instrumentals that often have been bounced with at least a heavy limited to maximize their volume I know that I must pay careful attention to mid and side information to make the vocals sit in with the music instead of laying "on top." On the other hand, I have been working to build up my mixing portfolio with more Rock and Metal bands. These mixes are very dense with often hundreds of stems that need to be glued together cohesively. That kind of variety keeps my work fresh and fuels my passion for audio engineering.
